You hear it at almost every 12 Step meeting and even almost every time two or more 12 steppers meet to talk. “Keep coming back,” and often, “Keep coming back, it works!” or even “Keep coming back! It works – if you work it.”
Obviously the message is to urge folks to keep coming back to meetings.
Meetings are an important part of recovery for most of us, particularly in the beginning.
This seems to be true regardless of the nature of the addiction and, it seems, phone meetings and maybe online meetings, work as well. For example, I let go of nicotine in all it’s forms through telephone meetings of nicotine anonymous.
Reminding people to come back can be a welcoming statement and may even help a newcomer feel at home.
The additions to the slogan vary from group to group and even varies according to where you live. They seem harmless enough.
12 Step slogan overuse
The slogans are subject to overuse. This is true not only of 12 Step slogans, but slogans used anywhere. Used too often and we tend to not even hear them.
“Keep coming back” may also tend to reinforce the mostly unconscious sense that anyone who has ever stepped into a 12 Step room needs to be there. That simply isn’t true, although it’s a tempting idea.
On the other hand, this slogan, along with the others can be a friendly reminder.
What do you think? Are the 12 Step slogans valuable? Are they overused? Tell us your opinion in comments.
Love, blessings and abundance,
