Duct
Tape, War and Rumors of War
The Program can give us balance anytime
First they, in this case the
U.S. Government, raised the terrorism level from Yellow(1)
(aka Elevated Position which
has been going on for so long few of us are paying any attention) to Orange (aka
High which apparently means they think something might happen soon).
Next came word that we should all
prepare. In addition to the obvious, like some food, some flashlights, a
battery operated radio (although one powered by either solar or a crank
might be better in my opinion). They also suggested plastic sheeting and
duct tape so we could all seal up our windows in case of some sort of
biological and/or gas attack.
Comic relief
Fortunately, some humor also
showed up. A friend of mine pointed out it takes less than a foot of duct tape
to cover your nose and mouth which makes about as much sense as sealing off a
room. Why? Because if you succeed in sealing off the room you'll run out of air
in five or six hours, depending various factors.
Daniel Shore, on
NPR's
Weekend Edition Saturday, called the various notifications "...the
orchestration of American jitters." Garrison Keeler also poked fun at the
alerts, declaring a fuchsia.
Meanwhile, the planet seems to
be dividing up between the hawks and doves as the U.N. struggles, millions
protest war and rally for peace around the world and George Bush continues a
massive military build-up. Of course, there's also North Korea...
From a Recovery point of view
What does all this mean
to our recovery? Well, in one very real sense, absolutely nothing.
Getting drunk, starting to use, allowing rage and resentment to build
because of these situations would simply be using them as excuses.
On the other hand,
although few of us have a sphere of influence that includes easy access to
world leaders, we can act.
- It probably makes
sense to do the same sort of prep we're supposed to do for earthquakes,
hurricanes, tornados and the like - as long as we do it gently.
- We can use the 'net -
I personally like
http://www.peace-action.org/
and
http://moveon.org/
which has a
virtual peace march
scheduled. (Hawks will have to find their own sites.)
- We can visualize
peace. And
pray for peace.
- We can recognize that
we have only today and this is true under any circumstances. In fact, we
really have only this moment. The "One day at a time" of Program can
work equally well in these uncertain and scary times.
And we can retain our sense of
humor. Love and laughter bring balance - balance is sorely needed these days.
Love, peace and
abundance,
