Tears of Gratitude and Joy

My son's wedding!

When I came to Alcoholics Anonymous over 26 years ago, I was a mess and my kids were miserable. Last weekend my youngest son got married. I was totally blown away, not only by the ceremony, but by my kids and grandkids!

For if I tell the whole truth, when I came to program I was lost and my kids were almost lost. Yet here we were, together, with the results of the 12 Steps showing up like mad.

We were all in the wedding; I was mother of the groom (and with Stacey's mother, got to light a candle,) my twins, Mike and Linda were groomsman and bridesmaid. Granddaughter Emily (she's 8) carried a basket of flowers and Grandson Ben (he's 6) followed the electric toy car that carried the ring. (Yes, it was a fun, formal wedding).

By the grace of the Goddess/God, all three of my kids are sober, lovely, grownups, earning decent livings and contributing to the world and life in general. I suppose I had something to do with it--I did get sober before the damage was total, and I did figure out how to get out of their way and let them grow to who they would be. But that strikes me more as grace than planning on my part. Plus I was blessed with three healthy and intelligent children.

If someone had told me when I stumbled up the steps to my first AA meeting that years later I would be weeping with pride and joy at one of my kid's wedding, I wouldn't have had a clue what they were talking about. The miracles possible, even likely with Program are, well, awesome!

Not only was the wedding, and all the stuff that went with it, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, reception, and more pictures than there should be, we had an absolute blast! Dancing with my adult sons is another glorious experience I never even thought about.

Nor, when I divorced their father, did I ever expect I'd actually enjoy not only his company, but his current wife too!

Can you tell how proud and happy I am? And how truly grateful for the gifts I've received simply because I've said 'yes' more than 'no' to the promises of the Program.

Love, peace and abundance,
