Not easy reading, but enlightening, this amazing book details what's needed for true sustainability. Written in 1981, I'm now in my third reading and delighting in Bucky's alternate and scientifically backed, world view.

For instance, learn why it's important we come to think of our planet in the round, and how maps color our thinking. Or find out why it costs the planet a million dollars to make a gallon of gasoline, and what that says about our driving habits.

Bucky was truly an amazing man. He coined the phrase 'space ship earth' and, after raising hell for many years, he bottomed out and decided to find out how he could earn a living by making a real contribution. He succeeded and opened up ways for all of us to rethink our place on the planet.

This is not a typical environmental book -- that is, it's not about how you can recycle. Rather it outlines an adjustment in thinking about ourselves and our world that, if we could get there, would result in true abundance and prosperity for all.

Keep this near by and read gently and slowly.

Power and peace - who could ask for more? Diane Dreher has taken the Tao Te Ching, that two-thousand year old, multi-translated guide to living, and gently feminized it. Very gently, and very effectively.

After all, when Lao-tzu wrote it, he was addressing men as he searched for alternatives to war and conflict. Most translations have maintained that masculine tone. Dreher, recognizing the value in the distaff voice, honors the original.

She includes the Yin of Inner Peace, and the Yang of Personal Power. The way they are presented makes the contrast, and the similarities if not obvious, at least accessible.

Earth Prayers

There's a prayer a day here and each one puts you in touch with yourself and your relationship to our green and blue planet.

The book is designed to take you through the wheel of the year in seven sections, but the pages are undated, so you can start any time. If you're feeling disciplined, start at the front and work your way through. Or use it almost as an oracle by letting the book open where it will.

There is a special section called Benediction for the Animals. The Meditations portion provides an excellent starting point for getting quiet and listening to the 'still small voice.'

There is also a Calendar of Earth Prayers which groups many of the prayers by month.
