Do you ever have books jump off the shelf for you? This one did for me - well, I actually knocked it off it's shelf, but that's good enough as far as I'm concerned. Besides I love Wayne Dyer's work and the subtitle, Making Conscious Contact with God Through Meditation was irresistible to me. I don't meditate well. I recognize it's value, and I'll give it a go for a week or two or three, but before long I find reasons not to sit for 10 or 20 minutes. My excuses range from "I forgot" to "I don't have time," but the truth is I just don't want to do it often. This book hasn't changed me into a regular mediator, but it's come closer than anything else so far, largely because of the CD that comes with the book - and I didn't even realize it had one until I got home! The text of the book is aimed right at me, and people like me. Dyer acknowledges that meditation isn't easy, that there are all sorts of barriers. He then gently refutes these and states simply and clearly the many reasons meditation is a good thing. He then explains Japa, which is a simple, truly simple easy way to get into the gap between our thoughts and stay there a bit - the essence of meditation. The text is great and even includes an FAQ and some testimonials, but the real key to this book is the CD. The CD has two sessions of Japa meditation - a 10-minute one and one that lasts 20 minutes. Each is a simple set of instructions that you follow, and voila, you're meditating. Either make meditation hugely accessible. If you're like me and have trouble meditating, this is the book for you.
